Elementary Poetry Residencies
“Rumble, bumpy, clash, clang, fast!”
From “Big Thing” by Henry, Grade 3
Your students’ writing can take off like the airplane in Henry’s poem.
Laura Shovan has been conducting in-school poetry workshops since 2002. She is an Artist-in-Education for poetry with the Maryland State Arts Council. A certified English teacher and children’s author, Laura will customize a three to six day poetry residency to fit your curriculum and grade level. See list of lessons. Laura is also available for one-time author appearances at schools, libraries and community groups.
Check out Laura’s article, “Artists-in-Residence Bring Poetry to Elementary Schools” (Baltimore’s Child Magazine, June 2004). It describes the ins and outs of an elementary-level poetry residency.
In Maryland, Laura charges a per session fee of $75. If you schedule a workshop through a granting organization like the Maryland State Arts Council, that fee may be lower. Grants are also available through the Howard County Arts Council.
Each session is 45 minutes to one hour. Travel fees and expenses are additional. Outside Maryland, please contact Laura to make individual arrangements. For distances more than a two-hour drive, train or airfare and hotel accommodations may be requested.
